All Your Scrubs

Although they have a charm all their own, scrubs aren’t exactly intended to make a stylish statement. They are the epitome of the idea that clothing should be more functional than fashionable. In putting substance over style, scrub manufacturers make sure that the clothing is comfortable and that it doesn’t restrict movement in any way. For the most part, doctors and nurses need to have short sleeves in order to work unimpeded.

All scrubs are somewhat loose-fitting, and plus size scrubs are no different. Scrubs are often worn with equally informal footwear – such as Crocs – because they’re easy to slip on and off in a jiffy. One thing is for sure: when doctors, nurses or orderlies are wearing scrubs, you can be sure that they mean business.

As more and more people are finding themselves out of work and worried about paying the bills, many of them are discovering that a job in the health care field may be the solution to their problems.
 
If handled properly, this could become a win - win situation.  Many unemployed individuals could find employment while addressing shortages of health care workers.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that health care is the only sector that has experienced significant growth in recent months. Two states with unemployment rates among the highest in the nation, Nevada and Michigan, have new programs to help their unemployed find new jobs while addressing shortages of health care workers. Wisconsin is also working to establish new programs to help funnel people into health care jobs that the state is forecasted to need.

So as these individuals go from unemployment lines to wearing medical uniforms, it is a great benefit to all involved.

The importance of cleanliness in a medical setting is blatantly obvious; germs and bacteria can infect open wounds as well as people with weak immune systems, both of which are concentrated in hospitals. Hygiene is always of the utmost importance, but scrubbing for a surgical procedure is an especially rigorous process. Nurses and physicians adopt scrubs for their medical uniforms – lab coats are not appropriate for surgery.

Most hospitals expect that the doctors’ and nurses’ nails will be socially clean and short. Handwashing involves the use of antiseptic skin cleansers. Medical professionals wash with their hands above elbow level, forcing water to run downward along the arms. They also take special care to clean under the fingernails. In most cases, this scrubbing process lasts between three and five minutes.
