As the baby boomer generation begins to retire, there is an ever-growing demand for individuals to provide elder care. This is a difficult area because those who belong to this generation do not like to discuss the fact that they are getting older.
There are various ideas being discussed to provide long-term care for the elderly. These ideas range from compensating those who provide care for family members in the home to changing some of the government regulations on nursing homes.
Nursing homes offer many unique challenges for employees. Many nursing home patients suffer from dementia and present very challenging behavior. The nurses and aides become physically and emotionally exhausted and yet are paid $2 to $3 per hour less than their counter-parts in the hospital setting.
This is an area that needs our immediate attention and concern. Regardless of the proposed solution, it is apparent that the need for men and women in medical uniforms will continue to rise.
